After a period of decline, Atlantic City reinvented itself as the East Coast's answer to Las Vegas. After Resorts International opened its doors in 1978, Atlantic City transformed from a quiet oceanside town into a gambling and entertainment hub. As of February 2011, Atlantic City is home to 11 casinos, most of them located near the city's famous Boardwalk. Resorts International is still in operation, along with Harrah's, Bally's, Caesars, Trump Taj Mahal and other big-name gambling establishments.
